Selecting a Suitable Pot for your Bonsai Tree
The new sapling has to be planted in a bonsai pot. Even if it is already planted in a bonsai pot, it will have to be transplanted after some time. While potting or repotting there are some pointers to be considered.
• The length, width and the depth of the pot must be of adequate proportions to hold enough soil and water necessary for the healthy growth of the plant. As the bonsai pot is generally smaller than the tree, its size is very important because it must hold all the nutrients necessary for the plant.
• The pot should easily support the tree and keep it supported for a long time. The material of the pot should be strong enough to sustain the pressure of the soil and water from within. This is one reason why bonsai pots have a wide base.
• For matters of proportion it is important to consider or visualize a balance between plant and bonsai pot. Look at a picture of a full grown tree to have an idea of how it will look when fully grown. Then decide on a pot.
• As your tree grows in size and shape, the pot will have to be replaced, so you will need more than one bonsai pot.
