Growing the Bonsai Tree

You need to check out some facts about the bonsai tree you have chosen, facts like:

• What is the normal height and span of the tree if allowed to grow to its fullest size? Based on this, you must prune the tree just right; over pruning it may make the plant wither.

• Does it require frequent watering?

• Is it a shade loving tree or one that requires sunlight, how much of sunlight does it need?

• Is it a flowering or a fruit bearing tree?

• Does it have an extensive root system?

All these answers come for how the tree behaves in its natural habitat. The answers will determine how much you prune the tree and how much you will need to water it. Keep the tree initially in the shade and handle it very gently.

Observe the tree for little changes that might indicate that its conditions are not suitable. Observe it for seasonal changes and signs of disease; observe any yellowing of the leaves. Use good soil and fertilizer as per recommendations for optimum growth. If growth is not at its best, you won’t be able to shape the tree the way you want.
